In the event of inclement weather, official announcements regarding the status of the campus will be posted via the following services.

Official Announcement Listings for the Campus

Announcements will be made by 6:00 a.m. for status changes affecting the start of classes that day. Should the campus close early due to inclement weather, announcements will be posted as needed.

1. Get a text message. Register your cellphone number at https://psualert.psu.edu/psualert/ and select "Mont Alto Alerts"

2. Call the Inclement Weather Hotline at 717-749-6090. This is the official announcement regarding the campus status during inclement weather. Employees should call this number if there is a question whether they need to report to work. Due to variations and misstatements by the media, employees are not to rely solely on what is on television and radio, but rather call the hotline.

3. Check the campus homepage at www.ma.psu.edu. The Mont Alto website will also be updated with the current status of the campus. In the event of a weather emergency, an image displaying the status of the campus will be displayed on the front page of the website. Essential employees always report to work unless notified otherwise by their supervisor.

Unofficial announcements may also be broadcast on these local radio and TV stations by 6:00 a.m.

Closures and Schedule Changes

If the campus is closed:  All classes are cancelled and offices are closed. Essential employees will report to maintain necessary operations such as food service, snow removal, building heat, etc.

If classes are cancelled:  When inclement weather causes poor campus conditions, classes may be cancelled. All non-essential employees should report to open their offices at 10 a.m.

If classes are on a modified schedule:  If the forecast predicts improving conditions, classes may be put on a modified schedule (listed below). This schedule will allow time for campus roads and sidewalks to be plowed and give students more time to reach campus. Offices will open at 10 a.m.

Click here for a current listing of the modified schedule.

If weather conditions are very severe, the campus may be closed which means all classes are cancelled and offices are closed. Only essential employees need to report for work. Although radio and TV stations will be notified of all weather-related decisions regarding classes (see listing below), nonessential staff should call the weather hotline 717-749-6090 to determine if they are required to report to work.

Because of the significant number of variations in the start of class times, please refer to the Mont Alto campus home page for class rescheduling. The inclement weather link is under “quick links, registrar, and then Modified Schedule.”

Faculty should indicate on course syllabi the start of each class in the event of a weather delay. Faculty who need to cancel individual classes when the campus is otherwise open should notify students through their voicemail greeting, Angel or email of class changes. Charlene Saeman (cms50@psu.edu, 717-749-6051) should also be notified by email or telephone.

This procedure will be re-evaluated on an annual basis.
