Meet the Jump Start Peer Mentors
Shannon is a second year student majoring in Business Management with a minor in International Business. A graduate of Hershey High School, she enjoys playing sports, listening to music, running, and going to the beach. As well as being a peer mentor, Shannon is also involved on campus in other roles. She serves as a Lion Ambassador and an Orientation Leader. Shannon wants to share with her mentees the importance of campus involvement. She wants to "give the guidance to new students that will hopefully encourage them to get involved, do well academically, and enjoy college."
Kevin, a fourth year student in the Human Development and Family Studies program, plans to one day be a counselor. Although Kevin commutes to campus from nearby Shippensburg, he has become very involved in campus activities including being an officer in the Allies Club and the HDFS Club as well as being active as an Orientation Leader and Lion Ambassador. Kevin loves working with people and helping others. As a second year Jump Start Peer Mentor, Kevin is excited to use his experience and passions to help support Jump Start students.
Kevin’s advice for incoming students -- “It's not only okay to get help, but it's the right thing to do. When you could use advice, counseling, tutoring, or whatever, GET HELP. Use the campus resources that are available. If you are not trying to succeed, then you are sabotaging your own future.”
Renee is a second year student pursuing a degree in Human Development Family Studies. As a commuter from Shippensburg, Renee helps out on her family's farm when not on campus. She enjoys hanging out with friends, watching movies, and going to the beach. As a previous Jump Start student, Renee knows the values of the Jump Start program and is an enthusiastic member of the Jump Start Peer Mentor team. She wants to share her experiences with her mentees and actively support them through their first year of college.
Berlinda, a Philadelphia Pennsylvania native, attended Lankenau High School. Berlinda is a first generation American; her family is originally from the country of Ghana. A second year student, she is pursuing her degree in Biology at Penn State. Berlinda is excited about mentoring! For the Jump Start students, she is interested in being "someone to rely on and someone who can relate to them."
A Human Development and Family Studies major, Sabrina is in her fourth year at Penn State Mont Alto. From Chambersburg, PA, Sabrina graduated from Chambersburg Area Senior High School in 2010. When not busy with school work, you may find her working, going to the gym, shopping, spending time with family and friends, and watching movies. Sabrina is involved in various campus clubs including HDFS Club, THON, CAMP, SGA, and she is an Orientation Leader. She is excited to be a Peer Mentor for Jump Start and states, "I want to help new students feel more comfortable about the college experience."
Taanya, from Washington D.C., graduated from Woodrow Wilson Senior High School. A 2012-2013 Jump Start student, Taanya is majoring in Civil Engineering. During her free time, she likes to hang out with her family and friends and go to museums, movies, and the mall. Taanya is interested in being "someone others can look up to and trust." She wants to make a difference for the Jump Start students!
