Academic Festival will Highlight Wide Array of Student Work

MONT ALTO, Pa. — On April 25, Penn State Mont Alto students will display and present academic highlights of their work during the Ninth Annual Penn State Mont Alto Academic Festival in the Multipurpose Activities Center (MAC). The event is sponsored by F&M Trust Company and the Cumberland Valley Tree and Landscaping Service. The public is invited to join students, faculty, staff, and administrators at all events. This year’s festival includes 48 projects, a record number, according to Robin Yaure, academic festival chair and senior instructor in human development and family studies.

The event will feature research-based projects, oral presentations, performances, and informational exhibits that cover a wide array of topics in the areas of biology, engineering, forestry, human development and family studies, music, nursing, occupational therapy, philosophy, Spanish, and more. A sampling of the projects includes:

  • An outside demonstration of a trebuchet – a type of catapult used in the Middle Ages – by students Emilio Cuesta, Alex Glenn, Chris Goodyear, Annetta Hartman, Zach Hudak, Bijesh Huerta, Hunter Rogers, and Justen Zachman, mentored by Jacob Moore, instructor in engineering.
  • An oral presentation by Emilee Panunzi,  “Equine Reproductive Technologies,” mentored by Lauraine Hawkins, assistant professor of biology;
  • A research-based project, “Flight Nurse Specialty, Roles and Requirements” by Ashley Lawrence, mentored by Stephanie Unger, instructor in nursing;
  • A research-based poster, “Evaluating a Genetically Diverse American Chestnut Orchard for Education and Research,” by Kyle Beaver, Aaron Lewis, Ethan Mansfield, and Colby Salmon, mentored by Elizabeth Brantley and Craig Houghton, instructors in forest technology.

The day’s schedule follows:

  • Noon to 2:30 p.m. – Research-based posters and informational exhibits, in the MAC
  • Noon to 3:15 p.m. – Oral presentations and performances, in the MAC, room 122
  • 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. – Art show reception, in the Academic Success Center, General Studies Building, room 101
  • 3:30 to 4 p.m. – Awards ceremony, in the General Studies Building auditorium
