Penn State offers an exciting opportunity for high school students to take college courses at a 50 percent tuition reduction. Qualified high school juniors and seniors can prepare for the future by earning college credits and experiencing the workload of a college class. Credits earned can be applied to a Penn State degree and are part of one transcript recognized at all Penn State campuses. Credits earned may also be considered for transfer to another institution.
Students will work with an academic advisor to select appropriate courses. For reference, a link to the schedule of all courses offered at Penn State Mont Alto for the upcoming semester has been provided under Early to College Resources.
Students who have completed their junior year or are currently in their senior year of high school may apply for high school nondegree enrollment. Exceptions for high school juniors and underclass students may be considered. Students who have graduated from high school may not participate in this program. This is also a great opportunity for homeschooled students who have not yet graduated.
- You must be a high school student in your junior or senior year.
- Minimum requirements:
- SAT score 1,000 (math and critical reasoning) or PSAT score 100 (math and critical reasoning)
- 3.0 overall grade-point average.
If a student has not taken either test, we can review an application based on PSSA scores. Students are reviewed individually by the Early to College coordinator in the Office of Admissions. Students who have graduated are not eligible to take part in the Early to College program.
Applying to the Program
Interested high school students should contact BOTH their high school counselor and the Penn State Mont Alto Office of Admission at 717-749-6130 or email@example.com. Download an Early to College application packet. Complete credentials to support the application process include the following:
- a current, official high school transcript
- SAT/ACT or PSAT scores
- a statement from a teacher, counselor, or principal in support of the student's enrollment at Penn State
Students will receive notification of the admission decision, along with instructions for placement testing. They will then be provided instructions regarding Penn State account setup and be scheduled to meet with the Early to College academic advisor for course scheduling. NOTE: Early to College students do NOT self-schedule.
Depending on the class, students may be required to take placement tests in English, math, or chemistry. A student may enroll in any approved course as long as the student has met all the prerequisite courses and successfully completed the required placement tests, and provided space is available.
Seniors may take up to 8 credits (2 courses) per semester and earn a maximum of 16 credits; juniors and underclass students must contact a Penn State representative to learn about their credit options. To remain in the program, students must earn a grade of C or better in each course.
It is the student's responsibility to arrange tuition payment. A special part of the Early to College program is a grant-in-aid in the amount of 50 percent of the tuition for a maximum of 8 credits per semester. Books, technology fees, and activity fees will also be applied.
In order to be reviewed for fall Early to College, all necessary documents must be submitted by June 1.
Students interested in spring Early to College must submit documents by December 1.

Pennsylvania Child Protective Services Law (PACPSL) Compliance Statement
Annually, more than 600 high school students schedule college courses from a multitude of disciplines at Penn State campuses.
Per recent changes to the Pennsylvania Child Protective Services Law (PACPSL), Penn State Mont Alto will continue to provide courses for qualified dual enrolled students, fully compliant with the required background checking requirements listed below:
Faculty who teach classes in which dual enrolled students under the age of 18 are registered, as well as staff who provide professional or support services, such as advising, counseling, or tutoring and students who serve in peer roles such as advising, mentoring or tutoring to these students, are required by State law to have the following three clearances: Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check (SP4-164), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Form (CY-113), and Federal FBI Fingerprint Criminal Background Check (Criminal History Report). Effective January 1, 2016, all individuals (current employees and new hires) interacting with dual enrolled students under the age of 18 are required to have valid clearance in place.
In order to ensure compliance in all future semesters, Penn State Mont Alto will identify sections of courses that typically enroll the most high school students and can confirm that faculty teaching these courses have completed the required background checks. In addition, staff and students who provide services such as academic advising, tutoring and mentoring will be required to complete the three required background checks.
