Registration is a continuous process at Penn State.  While exceptional circumstances may necessitate the need to process schedule changes after classes begin, students are encouraged to finalize all schedule changes prior to the first day of the semester.  Once the semester begins, the process of changing the student's course schedule is referred to as "dropping/adding" courses.

Students that registered on time and completed their registration are permitted to add courses during the Regular Drop/Add period.  Students who registered late are also permitted to add courses during the Regular Drop/Add period.

Courses may be added and dropped during the Regular Drop/Add period.  See the Student Action Guide and Calendar for dates.

Courses dropped during the Regular Drop/Add period are not recorded on the student's academic record. Courses dropped during the Late Drop period (see the Student Action Guide and Calendar for dates) are considered late drops, and are recorded on your academic record.   There are limitations on the number of  late-drop credits allowed.

  • Associate Degree Program = 10 Late-Drop Credits

  • Baccalaureate Degree Program = 16 Late-Drop Credits

Students may late drop courses in person or by using the "Late Course Drop" section of eLion.  Dropping courses will likely reduce your ability to maintain normal degree progress, possibly delaying graduation.  There are also financial issues to consider when dropping courses.  Part-time students (those taking fewer than 12 credits per semester) who drop a course after classes begin will incur a proportional tuition charge.

Courses added during the Regular Drop/Add period do not require any special permission.  To add a course that is full requires permission from the instructor; the student must add this course in person at the Records Office in Conklin.  Courses added after the Regular Drop/Add period require the signature of the instructor or professor on a Drop/Add Form.   Students must late add courses in person.

There is a $6.00 fee charged for each course processed as either a late add or a late drop.

There are courses offered that do not meet for the entire semester.  Course begin/end dates are identified for such courses.  For these courses, the length of the drop/add period and the deadline for the end of the late drop period are prorated.  Students may print out an individualized table of their Course Drop Dates on eLion.  This table will show the dates for all semester long courses and those with different add/drop deadlines for courses that don't run the entire semester.
